What is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is an umbrella term for dysfunction of the peripheral nerves in the body. The peripheral nerves, which are outside of the brain and spinal cord, relay messages between the brain and the body. When these nerves are damaged or do not function properly, it can cause a range of painful or debilitating symptoms.

Neuropathy Symptoms

  • Widespread pain

  • Burning or tingling sensation in limbs

  • Brain fog

  • Fatigue

  • Poor balance or loss of coordination

Health Conditions Associated With Neuropathy

Neuropathy is often connected to another underlying illness. Early and accurate diagnosis and proper management are critical in helping patients overcome their symptoms and improve their quality of life. Neuropathy-related conditions include:

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a condition that affects connective tissues, which are responsible for providing support to the skin, joints, and blood vessels. Although it is considered a genetic disorder, EDS is not always directly inherited. There is no test to diagnose EDS, but a person who meets the diagnostic criteria may have genetic testing to confirm the diagnosis.

There are 13 different types of EDS and each has its own set of symptoms and distinguishing characteristics. The most common symptoms that are seen across different types of EDS are hypermobility and tissue fragility. Other symptoms can include pain, digestive issues, and cardiovascular dysfunction. The most common type of EDS is Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, also known as hEDS or Type 3 EDS. Even among patients with the same type of EDS, severity and symptoms can vary greatly. That is why a personalized approach is needed to effectively treat EDS.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), also known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), is a chronic pain condition that usually develops after an injury or trauma. It results in intense, continuous pain that may seem disproportionate to the initial injury. CRPS can also cause changes in skin color and temperature, swelling, and muscle spasms. Early intervention with physical therapy, medications, and nerve blocks can help alleviate symptoms and prevent further progression of the condition. Patients with treatment-resistant CRPS may benefit from customized ketamine therapy.

Sjögren's Syndrome

Sjögren's syndrome is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks and damages the glands that produce tears and saliva. This leads to symptoms like dry eyes and dry mouth, along with fatigue and joint pain. Sjögren's can also affect other organs, such as the lungs and kidneys.

Rheumatic Pain

Rheumatic diseases encompass a range of conditions that affect the joints, muscles, and connective tissues. Common examples include rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and lupus. These conditions often result in pain, stiffness, and inflammation in the affected areas, potentially limiting mobility and impacting daily life. While the specific treatment varies depending on the type of rheumatic disease, approaches may include medications, physical therapy, and lifestyle modifications to reduce pain, improve joint function, and enhance overall well-being.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain condition characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, tenderness, and heightened sensitivity to touch. Individuals with fibromyalgia often experience fatigue, sleep disturbances, and cognitive difficulties, commonly referred to as "fibro fog." The exact cause of fibromyalgia is still not fully understood, but it is believed to involve abnormalities in the way the central nervous system processes pain signals. This condition predominantly affects women and can significantly impact daily functioning and quality of life.

Treatment Options

Dr. Cohen sees many patients who have been previously unable to find treatments that work for them. He works with patients to create a personalized treatment plan to relieve symptoms and restore quality of life.

Medication

Medications such as Cymbalta and Gabapentin are regularly prescribed for patients with neuropathy and related conditions. Dr. Cohen finds that these medications can work well for a percentage of patients, but patients who do not respond to them are often left searching for options. Dr. Cohen specializes in neuro-psychopharmacology and may be able to recommend out-of-the-box therapies that can help hard-to-treat symptoms.

Ketamine Therapy

Ketamine is a non-opioid anesthetic medication that can treat chronic pain and depression. When administered under expert medical supervision, ketamine therapy can modulate key neurotransmitter systems, leading to neural plasticity, mood regulation, and long-term pain relief. This unique mechanism of action allows it to bypass the limitations of conventional medications and offer relief to individuals who have struggled to find effective solutions.

Brain stimulation

Brain stimulation is a painless, non-surgical procedure that uses magnetic currents to activate the nervous system. Brain stimulation can improve chronic pain, neuropathic pain, fatigue, depression, and more. Dr. Cohen is experienced in Peripheral magnetic stimulation (PMS) and also specializes in transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) using the state-of-the-art CloudTMS system.

Nutraceuticals

Nutraceuticals harness the synergistic benefits of nutrition and pharmaceuticals. These compounds, often derived from natural sources, include a range of bioactive compounds, including vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, polyphenols, and more. Their unique properties enable them to target underlying biochemical imbalances to mitigate inflammation and alleviate symptoms. These compounds may be a good option for individuals who are sensitive or unresponsive to conventional therapies.

Lifestyle Changes

As part of his comprehensive approach, Dr. Cohen can also recommend changes to diet, exercise, and daily activities that can help ease inflammation and neuropathic symptoms.

Medical Marajuana

Our practice is able to prescribe medical marajuana under the Texas Compassionate Use Program. This is an option we recommend sparingly after other therapies fail to relieve symptoms.
