Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is a complex and persistent pain condition that extends beyond the normal course of an acute illness or healing period, typically lasting longer than three to six months. Unlike acute pain, which serves as a warning signal of injury or disease, chronic pain often remains long after the initial cause has healed and can arise from various sources, including musculoskeletal disorders, nerve damage, or chronic illnesses like arthritis or cancer. It can significantly impact an individual's quality of life, often leading to reduced mobility, opioid dependence, anxiety, depression, and difficulty performing daily tasks. The management of chronic pain is multifaceted, involving medications, physical therapy, psychological support, and sometimes interventional procedures, tailored to the individual's specific condition and needs.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory, and mood issues. Its exact cause is unknown, but it's believed to involve a combination of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors, leading to a heightened and painful response to pressure and other stimuli. Symptoms often begin after a physical trauma, surgery, infection, or significant psychological stress, with women being more susceptible to the condition. There's no cure for fibromyalgia, but a multidisciplinary approach involving medication, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes can help manage symptoms and improve overall quality of life.

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a group of inherited disorders that affect the connective tissues—primarily the skin, joints, and blood vessel walls. Characterized by hypermobility of the joints, stretchy and fragile skin, and a tendency to bruise easily, EDS can vary significantly in how it affects individuals. Some types of EDS may lead to more serious complications, such as organ and vessel rupture. The condition is caused by defects in certain genes that make collagen, an essential protein that provides structure and strength to connective tissue. There is no cure for EDS, but the treatment typically focuses on managing symptoms and preventing complications through physical therapy, pain management, and, in some cases, surgical interventions. We provide individualized care plans focusing on pain management, physical therapy, and genetic counseling.

Neuropathy

Neuropathy, often referred to as peripheral neuropathy, is a condition resulting from damage to the peripheral nerves. It typically causes weakness, numbness, and pain, usually in the hands and feet, but can affect other areas of the body. The condition can stem from a variety of causes, including diabetes (diabetic neuropathy), traumatic injuries, infections, metabolic problems, and exposure to toxins. One of the most common forms is diabetic neuropathy, caused by prolonged high blood sugar levels. Symptoms can range from mild tingling to severe pain and can lead to complications if untreated. Treatment focuses on managing the underlying condition causing the neuropathy and relieving symptoms, often through medication, physical therapy, and lifestyle changes.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain condition most often affecting one limb, usually after an injury or trauma to that limb. Characterized by severe, persistent pain that is disproportionate to the severity of the initial injury, CRPS involves a variety of symptoms including dramatic changes in skin temperature, color, and texture in the affected area, as well as intense burning pain, swelling, and sensitivity to touch or cold. The exact cause of CRPS is not well understood, but it is believed to involve abnormal inflammation and nerve dysfunction. Treatment typically focuses on pain management, physical therapy, psychological support, and sometimes nerve blocks or neuromodulation, aiming to reduce pain and improve mobility and limb function.

Sjögren's Syndrome

Sjögren's Syndrome is an autoimmune disorder primarily characterized by the body's immune system attacking its own glands that produce saliva and tears, leading to the hallmark symptoms of dry mouth and dry eyes. However, it can also affect other parts of the body, including joints, skin, kidneys, lungs, and nerves, potentially causing joint pain, skin rashes, and persistent dry cough. Sjögren's Syndrome can exist as a primary condition or develop secondary to other autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. The management of Sjögren's Syndrome often involves symptomatic treatment to alleviate dryness, as well as addressing any systemic complications, with a focus on improving quality of life. Our team focuses on symptomatic relief through specialized treatments and lifestyle adjustments.

Rheumatic Pain

Rheumatic pain refers to the discomfort associated with rheumatic diseases, a diverse group of disorders primarily affecting the joints, tendons, ligaments, bones, and muscles. Characterized by inflammation and pain, common examples include rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, lupus, and gout. These conditions can cause varying degrees of joint stiffness, swelling, redness, and decreased range of motion, often worsening with age. Rheumatic pain is not only limited to the musculoskeletal system but can also affect internal organs and lead to overall fatigue, significantly impacting an individual's quality of life. Management typically involves a combination of medication, physical therapy, and lifestyle changes to reduce symptoms and improve function.

Central Sensitization Syndrome

Central Sensitization Syndrome (CSS) is a condition characterized by an abnormal response in the central nervous system, leading to heightened sensitivity to pain. In CSS, the brain and spinal cord become more receptive and reactive to pain signals, resulting in amplified and prolonged pain experiences, often without a clear physical cause. This heightened sensitivity can also make ordinary touch or pressure painful. Commonly associated with chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, and chronic fatigue syndrome, CSS is complex and involves both neurophysiological and psychological factors, requiring a multifaceted approach for effective management. We address this condition through a combination of medical treatments and therapies designed to retrain the nervous system.

Post-COVID Syndrome

Post-COVID Syndrome, the lingering aftermath of COVID-19 infection, presents a diverse range of symptoms that can persist for weeks to months, impacting various body systems. Common symptoms include persistent fatigue, respiratory issues like shortness of breath and cough, cardiovascular concerns such as palpitations, neurological effects including brain fog and headaches, gastrointestinal disturbances, musculoskeletal pains, and other varied signs like skin rashes and hair loss. This condition, affecting individuals regardless of their initial infection's severity, is believed to involve complex immune and inflammatory responses and necessitates medical attention for management. Our treatment plans are tailored to address specific symptoms and aid in recovery.

Chronic Migraine

We offer comprehensive treatment options for those suffering from chronic migraines. Chronic migraine is a debilitating condition characterized by frequent and severe headache episodes. It's more than just a severe headache; it's a complex neurological disorder with a range of symptoms. Our dedicated approach to managing this condition involves a combination of personalized medical treatments, lifestyle adjustments, and supportive therapies designed to reduce the frequency and severity of migraines and improve overall quality of life.
